Testimonial: what Mike thought about accessibility research

Paid research sessions can take many forms, from focus groups and interactive workshops to remote research from home or one-to-one interviews. It can be particularly intimidating to attend a session when the topic is accessibility research, especially if you have an impairment or disability to take into consideration.
Will there be stairs? It’s in an unknown location, how will I get there? Will I be asked to use a website that I can’t read properly or use my assistive device to help me?
These are all common questions we hear from people who take part in accessibility research, so we’ve asked Mike, who has taken part in some projects with us over the years, to give us his thoughts on accessibility research from his experience. We’re always looking to make our research inclusive and accessible for all, so it’s feedback like Mike’s which really helps us to achieve this!
What were Mike’s expectations before the session?
Now that Mike has done a few different types of session with us, he has more of an idea what to expect. As he points out, “good instructions always help!” so he never feels unsure of what to do or where to go. He says it helps that we often provide a map showing the location of the research, as they can be held in unfamiliar locations and it’s always handy to know the type of place it will be taking place at. Mike can then make the necessary travel arrangements, and check any queries with the project manager, such as access to the venue or instructions on arrival.
Mike also says our website is clear, the application process is simple, and getting confirmation is great: “it really helps you feel prepared for the session and know what to expect”.
What does Mike enjoy most about taking part?
Part of the fun with paid research is meeting new people and sharing your feedback in an environment where you are listened to and your feedback is really taken onboard.
“It’s good to see your feedback being used!”
Mike says he enjoys getting out of the house, so this is a great opportunity to do just that – he loves meeting people from all walks of life and hearing what everyone has to say!
What would Mike say to anyone who hasn’t taken part yet?
“Go for it! It’s easy, fun and you get paid for your opinion”
Mike takes pride in being involved with People for Research and helping to improve websites, games, apps and more for future users. It’s opinions like his that are helping to make the web accessible for everyone.
